Each week, PPG summarizes important takeaways from the major Buffalo Common Council meetings. We also include information from Council meetings related to our Community Agenda items
This summary focuses on the Regular Meeting, Common Council's primary meeting, where they make official decisions on issues.
During the Regular Meeting, Common Council called on the New York State Office of Cannabis Management and the City of Buffalo Law Department to implement rollout guidelines for the sales and distribution of cannabis products. Council Member Bollman has mentioned that there have been pop-up stores all around Buffalo with unregulated, non-taxable cannabis products, often through "gifting." He hopes that by getting the Office of Cannabis Management involved, they can outline the licensing process, zoning implementation, and storefront appearance. This would include calling on the Office of Cannabis Management to bar any stores that opened before the licensing rollout from being retailers in the future. Council Member Scanlon also mentioned that the gifting stores are causing issues in communities and that these stores often have unregulated products and money. He wants to ensure the residents are safe.
Two properties in the Cobblestone District—110 South Park Avenue and 118 South Park Avenue—haven't been adequately maintained. Council Member Nowakowski stated that the property owners failed to care for them. He wants to acquire these properties through eminent domain because of their deterioration, which poses a risk to residents. Council President Pridgen noted he would like to use eminent domain only if necessary. He hopes to have everyone's perspectives heard, including the owners, before taking over the properties to base the decision on facts.
