Community members gathered on September 20th to remember Daniel Prude on what would have been his 44th birthday. Prude was killed by Rochester police while experiencing a mental health crisis in 2020. The Buffalo gathering was one of four across the state honoring Prude's memory and calling for the passage of Daniel's Law, a state bill that would send health professionals instead of police to mental health crisis calls. Members of the Community Responders for Erie County coalition, including PPG, also presented a proposal for a community responder team pilot program for Erie County. Community responder teams composed of health professionals and peers with lived experience have proliferated across the country since 2020 as an alternative to police response for low-level 911 calls.
