The 501(c)(3) Advocacy Lab Follow Up

On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, Buffalo Commons, a joint collaboration between PPG and Cornell in Buffalo, hosted its first Lab in what will be a series of educational programs beginning this fall. It was free and open to the public. Sam Magavern, Executive Director of Partnership for the Public Good lead the discussion to help non-profit organizations understand how to be active in policy and advocacy while staying within their legal limitations.

While 501(c)(3) non-profits cannot directly support or oppose candidates for public office, there are many activities these organizations and their staff may do. He provided information about laws and rules regarding advocacy and lobbying by non-profit organizations, including election-related activity. The Lab was held in the Buffalo Commons Classroom at 617 Main Street, Suite 300 on Wednesday, September 12, from 12:30 to 1:45pm.

Over 30 participants engaged in this discussion. Hear what they had to say about the lab:

  • "The information was excellent but I really was excited to learn about the resources available at Buffalo Commons for our organizations to use."
  • "It was great! The real-life examples were so helpful..."
  • "Specific borderline cases and the discussion about each...was helpful"
