Each week, PPG summarizes important takeaways from the major Buffalo Common Council meetings. We also include information from council meetings related to our Community Agenda items. If you want to learn more about how the council meetings work and how you can get involved, check out our guide. As a reminder, anyone can attend these meetings. They are on the 13th floor of City Hall, and all the agendas can be found on the council’s meeting website.

In the Caucus Meeting, discussion of the foreclosed properties auction continued. Majority Leader Leah Halton-Pope noted that the council had asked the Law Department for clarification about the remaining surplus funds held by the city. She said the department had shared their opinion in a confidential memo, not available to residents unless each council member agreed to make it public.

Council Woman Zeneta Everhart asked for the council to take more time to consider the resolution against placing wind turbines in Lake Erie. Members noted that they had been receiving false information, and they would like to schedule an additional hearing to learn more about the plan. It will go to the Community Development Committee for further discussion and public comment on January 14th.

In the Regular Meeting, the council adopted yet another resolution to look into the handling of American Rescue Plan funds. This measure calls for an in-depth study of the funding of non-profit organizations, including the amounts they were originally told they would get, the amounts they were ultimately awarded, home much money they have actually seen, and what the timeline for all this funding is.
