How do you submit a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request to get public records, data, and information from government? How can organizers and advocates use FOIL to strengthen their campaigns?

This workshop will cover what the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) is and how researchers and community organizers can use it to deepen their analysis and strengthen their advocacy campaign or project.

Join the Civil Rights and Transparency Clinic from the University at Buffalo School of Law as they share the basics:

  • How to effectively request public records using freedom of information laws;
  • What types of documents you can obtain through records requests;
  • Strategies for using public records in your campaigns or research project;
  • What to do when your request is improperly ignored or denied, or a government department charges an unreasonable fee to fulfill your request for information.

Participants will have the opportunity to draft a FOIL request of their choosing and get feedback on it from the Clinic during the workshop.

This workshop is in-person with lunch provided. Because space is limited to 25 participants, registration is required. Please register here
