Join us on The Public Good. This week we’re featuring Jerome Wright and Steve Hart with the Western New York Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement and the #HALTsolitary Campaign. They’ll be discussing the Humane Alternatives to Long-Term (“HALT”) Solitary Confinement Act.
The Act was passed in New York State during the 2021-2022 legislative session and went into effect April 1, 2022. It restricts the use of segregated confinement and creates alternative therapeutic and rehabilitative confinement options.
However, #HALT has gotten pushback and has been subject to scrutiny, particularly among corrections officers whose legal challenge to the Act was dismissed by a federal judge in June.
Jerome and Steve will talk about their advocacy around #HALTsolitary, why it’s important, and will address concerns around the Act and its implementation.
