Join us on The Public Good! This radio show begins our series focused on police reform. For the next few weeks, we'll take stock of changes being made by Buffalo and New York State and we'll discuss what's still needed to transform safety and justice in our communities.
On today's show, we talk with Miles Gresham, a public defender with the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo and a member of the Free the People WNY Coalition. We focus on understanding three commitments from Mayor Brown's executive order last week (changing arrest procedures, ending stops and searches based on the "smell of marijuana", and issuing stop receipts) and how these can be fully implemented. We also reflect on how to achieve bigger, lasting change during this time.
Over the next few weeks, we'll dig in to topics like police oversight, alternatives to arrests that better respond to public health issues (mental health and drug use), fines and fees justice and biased traffic enforcement, and more. Join us every Tuesday on Facebook and on Power 96.5 WNY.
